Did you guys here about this one? Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have sold the first pics of their newborn twins, Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline, to People magazine for a reported $14 million, making them the most lucrative baby photos yet. People is supposedly splitting the bill with Hello!, a British tabloid, but that’s still some serious cash. The question is: are the pictures really worth it?
“Baby photos don’t necessarily translate into more magazines,” admitted one editor. “It’s about projecting the image that you are an authority. Hopefully down the road it will lead to sales, and advertisers will want to come to you. But you’ve got to sell millions more magazines in a given week to offset the cost of an A-lister’s baby.”
Brangelina’s daughter Shiloh kicked off the baby photo craze when she was born in 2006, fetching around $4 million from People for her pics, while photos of son Pax netted $2 mil. Now that the couple is on to baby numbers five and six, I must admit that I’m just kind of over Brangelina and all their kids, just as I’m sure they are sick of the paparazzi and the media following their every move. Don’t get me wrong — I wish the Pitt-Jolie clan the best and, since Angie and Brad are both gorgeous, I’m sure their twins will be gorgeous, but I’m not planning on running out to buy the latest issue of People on Monday to see their first photo spread. Is that so wrong?
